Cameroon

Cameroon is situated on the West coast of Africa and its population is about 16 million, 1.6 million being in the NW Province. A recent population census was conducted in November 2005. When the results are known they will be posted on this page.
Most of Cameroon is under French influence, and is Francophone. The NW and SW Provinces are British orientated, and largely Anglophone.
First inhabited by the mysterious Pygmies, and then the Bantu and Sudanic peoples, Cameroon, would like other West African countries, eventually become an infamous source of slaves for Muslim and European Traders.
Missionaries arrived in the mid-19th century, and the land was subsequently colonized by Germany. In 1918 at the end of W W 1, it was invaded by both Britain and France, and was later divided between those two countries.
Cameroon first flirted with independence in 1960, but then a long series of internal political jugglings between north and south, and the bloody coups of the 1980s delayed that process until the 1990s.
The country is ethnically diverse with over 225 individual tribal groups and dialects. The local economy is driven by foreign aid, a variety of agricultural ventures, as well as oil and timber production.
